Kidepo is among Africa’s finest wildernesses, and CNN named it the third-best safari National Park in Africa. It is located in the northeast corner of Uganda, about 700 kilometers from Kampala, and wedged between the borders of South Sudan and Kenya. A savanna environment extends in all directions from Apoka, the national park’s center, far beyond the declared area of 1442 sq km, towards vistas framed by distant mountain ranges, providing tourists with an unrivaled wildlife viewing experience.
The park is made up of the Kidepo and Narus rivers’ two primary valley systems. The plains can be rough and scary at times. While the animals jostle for water supplies, a gust of wind will transport dust from one area to the next. When the rains are plentiful, however. This lowland is teeming with life. Herds will be able to roam freely once water is secured.
Great herds of giraffes were abundant here in the 1960s, but buffaloes, antelope, and zebras now reign supreme. Kidepo is as beautiful as the rest of Uganda’s parks, and it’s another area where all of Uganda’s wildlife comes together in the purest sense.
Kidepo literally means “to pick from under” in the native “Nga – Karamajong” dialect. A magnificent wildlife viewing drive, a visit to the scenic Sipi falls, and a cultural visit to a Manyatta village are among the highlights of this short tour.
